Orchestra Bands Teach More Than Music Alone

by Constance Maldonado

The benefits of learning to play a musical instrument as a child are widely known. The include improved academic performance, the establishment of a sense of discipline, and increased self-confidence. Additionally, participation in orchestra bands once a child has grasped how to play the instrument opens doors to even more life lessons and tools that can be applied to many areas of life.

Coordination and patience are lessons learned quickly while discovering how to read music and the basics of how music works. Reading music is essentially its own language, and learning to do so at an early age prepares children for later challenges in learning foreign languages. Music itself is not only artistic but also very steeped in mathematics, and the basics of music theory that are absorbed while learning can help children understand not only music but also math a little more easily.

The discipline required to master a musical instrument is a valuable life skill for anyone to learn, and the self-confidence that arises from doing well at a difficult task will enhance every other area of a child's life.

But orchestra bands bring about different skills and challenges. For one, much like organized sports, band teaches basic ideas of teamwork and cooperation that are not as easily absorbed in a standard classroom, and the simple act of being part of a group is a source of pride and establishes a feeling of community and belonging.

In addition, membership in a group instills a level of responsibility to others. Natural instincts encourage people to avoid holding their group back from meeting its potential, and this sense of responsibility ultimately leads to understandings of concepts like commitment and dedication.

Last but certainly not least, spending time with others who share similar interests and is an excellent way to feel like a valuable contributor and build excellent self-esteem. Sharing abilities and talents with others makes a child feel proud of himself. While participating in an orchestra band is obviously about the music most of all, the lessons such participation teaches over time are invaluable, and can be easily applied to every facet of life down the line.
