Exactly How New Rap Artist Flourishes

by Farah Fan

A new rap artist must have the right attitude in order to remain in the business. In the past, men and women used to look down on Rap music and the Hip Hop culture. They categorize the music as brutal and the many reasons behind violent actions among America's teens. Neither do they look at Rap music as an art form for which it is; instead it was considered a fad that will hopefully disappear. Rap music has been in existence for more than two decades. Just as other genres of music have progressed and been influenced over time, Rap music too has progressed significantly and must be acknowledged for the art it has become.

Rap and hip-hop music actually started 1000's of years ago in Africa with the "griots", who were village story tellers who played an easy handmade instrument while they told stories of loved ones and village occasions. The griot was, and still is, a major type of communication in parts of Africa. This "talking" while music is playing is rap music in its most basic form. Aside from the griot tradition, rap is rooted in the pain of Black-American experience which began with slavery. While slaves were doing work in the fields, they'd frequently sing. Part of the songs that they sang was "call and answer" selections. One particular leader would call out a part of the song and the remaining slaves would answer with the next line.

Rap has endured the test of time and its recognition rages on with today's artists churning out hit after thought-provoking hit. The beat really does go on. As the music evolved, so did the art of rapping. Freestyle rapping is but one popular form in which rappers spit out lyrics in an instant. This is also popular with rapping duels wherein two rappers go head-to-head and attempt to top one another in coming up with the very best rhyme.

As the 1980s evolved, rap songs became both much more popular and even more complicated. During the 1990s, rap music changed drastically with the advent of gangsta rap. Although the lyrics of rap songs had until now involved an element of boasting, gangsta rap took this lyrical sentiment to another level. Gangsta rap triggered much debate among those who claimed it perpetuated bad stereotypes of black urban people.

A new rap artist should have consistency. Consistency is quickly confused with high frequency. Consistency is actually the idea of creating a frequency pattern, whether it is a mix tape weekly or yearly, and adhering to it. What truly hurts rappers is an extended break. Building momentum is really a hard task, and if that task is accomplished, relaxing on it is regarded as the most counter-productive move an artist could make. Although the beat and rhythm of rap music is essential to its basic structure, the strength of rap music lies in its lyrics. Rap songs often can use the same pre-recorded background music but the difference in the lyrics of the song makes them stand apart from each other. It is the lyrics of the songs that make rap music amazing.
